Is It Important To Remove A USB Flash Drive Safely

USB flash drives have been an extremely useful tool for transferring and storing data. Flash drives can store documents, photos, files, browsing tools, and more. The small size of a flash drive makes it easy to carry. They can also be properly secured by users utilizing encryption.

Many users fail to take the necessary time to properly remove a flash drive from their computer. This is a dangerous practice that can threaten the USB drive and the computer system. Drives should always be properly ejected from the system they are connected with. Abruptly unplugging the drive can damage the circuits of the USB drive or the USB ports of a computer, laptop, or other system. This can cause malfunctions during future connections. Abrupt disconnection can also cause corruptions in data that is being transferred to the drive. The data can become either damaged or entirely lost. In some cases, data that is already being stored on the drive can be lost as well.

The best way to prevent damage to the drive or data being lost is to follow the steps needed to properly disconnect the drive. There are multiple ways this can be accomplished.

    New call-to-action

    Task Bar

While operating on a computer or laptop, users can find an eject button for the USB at the end of the task bar. The eject button can be found on the far right side. Most computers will have an icon that looks like a USB drive or text that reads, “Safely Remove USB Device”. Clicking this button will ensure that the USB is properly disconnected.

    “This PC” or “This Device”

Users can also find another eject button under the “devices and drives” section. Many computers have sections that show what systems or devices are being run through the computer. From there, users can find their USB device and choose “eject”.

“Quick Removal Mode” in Device Manager

Some of the newest systems allow users the option to enable a quick removal feature. When this mode is enabled, USBs can be safely disconnected at any point as long as data isn’t being transferred from or to the drive. Users should check their system to see if quick removal is an option before attempting to remove the USB without using an ejection button.
